  9. FAQ — RAV4 vs CR-V

The Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V are the two most reliable, practical, and popular family SUVs in the world. Both have been class leaders for decades. Both have strong hybrid variants. Both have excellent ownership records. So which one should you actually buy?

Quick Verdict

Buy the RAV4 if: reliability is your absolute priority, you want the strongest resale value, or you tow or use rough roads regularly.

Buy the CR-V if: you want a more refined, car-like driving experience, better rear passenger space, or the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain.

Pricing Comparison (2026)

Toyota RAV4: - RAV4 LE (base): $30,075 - RAV4 XLE: $33,075 - RAV4 Hybrid: $31,975 (+$0 fuel cost premium over petrol) - RAV4 Prime (PHEV): $42,995

Honda CR-V: - CR-V LX: $31,895 - CR-V EX: $34,895 - CR-V Hybrid: $33,895 - CR-V PHEV (Sport Touring): $43,500

Both are similarly priced. The hybrid variants are now the recommended choice for most buyers — the fuel savings pay back the price premium within 3-4 years for typical drivers.

Reliability: RAV4 Wins

Toyota's reliability record is unmatched in the mainstream SUV market. The RAV4 has appeared in J.D. Power's top reliability rankings consistently for 15+ years. The hybrid system in particular has an exceptional long-term record — Toyota has been making hybrid powertrains since 1997.

The CR-V is also highly reliable by most standards, but Honda has had some issues with the 1.5-litre turbocharged engine's tendency to mix oil with fuel in cold climates. The 2025-26 update addressed this, but it remains a consideration for buyers in cold regions.

Winner: RAV4

Space and Practicality: CR-V Wins

The CR-V's interior packaging is cleverly executed. Rear passengers get class-leading legroom — noticeably more than the RAV4. The boot is slightly smaller (536 litres vs 580 litres for the RAV4), but the folding rear seats create a completely flat load floor, which the RAV4 does not.

The RAV4's boot is wider and slightly more square — better for large items. Ground clearance is also higher (6.4 inches vs 6.0 inches), making the RAV4 more capable off-road and in snow.

Winner: CR-V for passengers, RAV4 for cargo and off-road

Technology and Infotainment

The 2026 CR-V has a 9-inch touchscreen with Honda Sensing 360 (360-degree safety system) as standard across the range. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard from the EX trim. The interface is generally faster and more intuitive than the RAV4's.

The RAV4 comes with Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 (excellent) and an 8-inch touchscreen on base models, upgrading to a larger unit on higher trims. The system is functional but feels slightly dated compared to the Honda.

Winner: CR-V

Driving Experience

The CR-V is widely considered the better car to drive day-to-day. The steering is more communicative, the ride more comfortable on motorways, and the cabin noise isolation superior. It feels more like a refined car than a utilitarian SUV.

The RAV4 is perfectly competent to drive — but it prioritises durability over refinement. The petrol engine can feel noisy under hard acceleration. The hybrid is significantly smoother.

Winner: CR-V

Running Costs

Both hybrids deliver 38-42 MPG in real-world driving. Servicing costs are similar — Toyota dealers have a slight edge on parts availability and cost. Insurance groups are nearly identical.

Depreciation is where the RAV4 pulls ahead. Used RAV4s retain value better than CR-Vs in most markets, meaning a lower total cost of ownership over 5 years when you factor in resale.

Winner: RAV4 overall, tie on running costs

Which to Choose?

If you're buying new and keeping for 7-10 years: RAV4 Hybrid. Unbeatable reliability, strong resale value, proven hybrid system.

If you value passenger comfort and technology and plan to change after 3-4 years: CR-V Hybrid. Better to drive, more space for rear passengers, superior infotainment.

If you need plug-in hybrid capability (regular short journeys, home charging): CR-V PHEV has a longer EV-only range (40 miles) vs RAV4 Prime (42 miles) — both are excellent.
